Wingspan

Board Game Elizabeth Hargrave Stonemaier Games Wingspan

Grab your binoculars and soar to the skies in this gorgeously colourful engine-building game. With 170 stunning cards, a fabulous bird feeder dice holder and other memorable components such as marbled eggs, food tokens and unique wooden dice - if you are not already enthusiastic about birds, this game just might change that for you.

Wingspan is played over four rounds with each player acquiring resources in food and eggs in order to add bird cards to their player mat. Each card is worth varying victory points & triggers different bonuses, with the ultimate aim of having the most points in your aviary by the end of the game.

Each player starts with a player mat, 8 action cubes (in your chosen colour), 1 of each food token, a handful of bird cards (deciding which ones to keep in exchange for discarding a food token for each one you do) and a bonus card to help boost your victory points, dependant upon which birds you collect.

Upon your turn you may take one of 4 actions: play a bird from your hand into one of the designated habitats on your player mat (Forest, Grassland or Wetland); gain food from the bird feeder, lay eggs in your birds nests or draw more cards.

Action cubes are placed on empty slots on your board to determine which actions you will take each turn and are reduced by one after each round (the lost cubes being used to mark your score on the end of round goals.)

When you lay bird cards (costing food & eggs) they may have instant abilities, or features and powers when ‘activated’ as you build your feathered engine. When you take an action to gain food, eggs or draw new cards, your action cubes will travel from right to left from the vacant slot over each bird in that habitat, which will then activate the bird’s powers and can enable many combos for gaining extra points or resources.

Not only do the bonuses make good reading but each card is beautifully designed with fine artwork and information about each bird, including size of wingspan, what they eat, where they can be spotted and a fact about each one.

With many scoring opportunities and decisions to make on where to focus your strategy for the most prosperous outcome, along with the amazing components of this game, there is no wonder why Wingspan was one of the top games of 2020 and continues to fly to people’s gaming tables.

After a few games you will most definitely be spreading those wings further to bring the European and Oceania expansions back to your nest as well.
